Puerto Viejo in Pictures

"You should  take a trip to Costa Rica. They have nice beaches there," a German girl mused as we walked around town.

"They have nice beaches here in Bocas, " I responded.

"But they have beaches with black sand in Costa Rica," she informed me.

Black skin, black sand, black bikini...hhhmm, off I go to CR. Four hours away from Bocas del Toro, Perto Viejo, Costa Rica was a good option to exit the country within the 180 day I'm allowed to stay here without a visa, and avoid becoming the first Haitian ever to be deported back to the U.S. You can find more information here about the process for crossing the border. I ended up only staying one night in Costa Rica for reasons that will become clear to you in my upcoming post. However, I wanted to share some of the photos from that trip with you:

On both sides of the border, the countryside reminded me so much of Haiti.

With it's Afro-Caribbean culture and swell of tourists, Puerto Viejo felt like a larger version of Bocas

I ran into this Costa Rican guy carving a canoe on the beach. He was very excited to show off his craftmanship

I found the black sand beaches alongside the town, only to realize that the black sand was HOT, too hot to stand on very long

Watching the waves

I love to watch black bodies in motion, unbossed and unbothered.

I found a local artisan shop that displayed this very cool artwork by a local artist that goes by the name, Hulk. I couldn't buy just one in the series, but couldn't offered to buy them all. These are the moments when I miss selling my soul for a salary just a little.
